Although the Corona pandemic is currently hitting the headlines in motorsport, all race series are busy with a (still) possible season preparation. Patience is still needed and nobody knows when the times will change again. The Drexler-Automotive Formula Cup announces the comeback of Swiss Thomas Amweg. The ex-champion from the 2014 REMUS Formula Cup returns to the circuit this season and will only be seen at selected events on the mountain. Amweg completed his last circuit racing season in 2015 and, with the support of his sponsor PHIMMO, switched to mountain racing, where his father Fredy Amweg has celebrated countless successes in the past. "We had a great time on the mountain," says Amweg. With the Lola B99/50 F3000 Thomas Amweg has gained a lot of experience and in 2019 he finished among the top 3. Now the ex-Formula 3 champion is back on the circuit. The Dallara 305 Mercedes will be used. Exactly with this vehicle Sebastian Vettel 2006 his Formula 3 season took place. Sebastian Buemi drove the Formula 3 racer one year later. "We have always maintained the car and it would be a pity not to move the car. The Vettel family has always been very interested in buying the car, but it is still with us today," reveals Thomas Amweg. With the help of Jo Zeller Racing, everything was brought up to date and a competitive set-up for the possible season opener at Red Bull Ring was installed. "I hope the season can start soon despite the difficult situation. I'm not only looking forward to the time chase on the track. I'll also enjoy the hours before and after because I've always enjoyed the family environment in the series," says Thomas Amweg.

The Corona/Covid 19 pandemic has been crippling motor sport for a good month now. If you like, you could observe an emergency stop worldwide. Not only the federations, series organizers and promoters, as well as teams, pilots and sponsors agree that the health of the people is now the highest priority. The challenges are also unique for the Drexler Formula Cup. So far there have been no cancellations in the calendar. The season opener in mid-May at the Red Bull Ring (15.-17.05.) depends on the approval of the authorities in Austria. As was heard, after Easter the situation will be reassessed in order to decide which major events will take place at the Red Bull Ring. "The situation is not easy for us, especially after the cancellations of many motorsport events in the last four weeks. We are in contact with both the FIA Zone Championship and the TopJET F2000 Italian Formula Trophy by phone every week in order to monitor developments and react as quickly as possible", says coordinator Franz Wöss.

Formula Renault Champion Nico Gruber changes to ADAC TCR Germany this season. The Austrian becomes team mate of Antti Buri at Hyundai Team Engstler. While Buri will fight for the championship in the Hyundai i30 N TCR, Gruber is hoping to fight for the rookie title. After the successful season in the Drexler Formula Cup, the 18-year-old young driver can be trusted to do so. Gruber caused a sensation in TCR Malaysia and won his first race at Sepang in January. "We are happy that drivers from the Drexler Formula Cup manage to attract attention with successes. We still see ourselves as a platform for the young drivers whose career path should open up" says Franz Wöss. Gruber follows in the footsteps of Luca Stolz (GER), Nikolaj Rogivue (SUI), Christopher Höher (AUT) or Jakup Smiechowski (POL), who have made the leap into international GT and prototype racing and were successful in the Drexler Formula Cup and REMUS Formula Cup for several years. Nowadays it is not possible to follow a hundred percent automatic development of young drivers coming from formula sport. Especially the formula sport has had to cope with a radical change due to the dissolution of many national racing series from 2013 onwards, especially in Formula 3. This has led to many drivers deciding to pursue a career in GT or touring car racing. Between the current Formula 4 and the FIA Formula 3 alone there are worlds apart financially. "We continue to offer a manageable financial environment and drive on internationally renowned race tracks. I think that as Drexler Formula Cup we make a good contribution to the learning process that young people go through", says coordinator Franz Wöss.

After a successful season last year, the Drexler Formula Cup for 2020 is in the starting blocks. Season start will be from 15 - 17 May 2020 on the Red Bull Ring. The Formula 1 track in Styria has been able to offer a record starting field in last year's season. With a total of five categories, the Drexler Formula Cup can offer a variety for this season, which will certainly arouse further interest among teams and drivers. From Formula 3, up to Formula Renault and Formula 4, the established classifications are present to make the leap into formula racing or to push the career ladder further with Monoposti.
